Wow! I really didn't see this coming. I know that's what everyone seems to say, but I really am shocked. Anyone who truly knows me knows that I'm pretty quiet and reserved until I really get to know you, and I certainly don't feel comfortable with any kind of spotlight. LOL! So although I love that someone thought enough of me to nominate me, it is waaayyyy out of my comfort zone, but I'll do my best.
I came out of my aMAZEn workout Saturday and opened a surprising e-mail from Channel telling me about the spotlight nomination. It really did bring a smile to my face. Then I thought about all the other testimonies from spotlight WODs that I've read since joining and how moving and motivating they are, and I know I certainly don't have anything to compare to that.
I can tell you that I am forever grateful that Rachal Fries never gave up on inviting me to this truly unbelievable place. I have been consistently working out, taking typical gym classes and running for about 15 years. Something only a few people at the gym know is I actually taught classes for a few years a while back (nothing like CrossFit), but eventually quit teaching and just did my own thing when life got too hectic. When I got bored with my own thing and felt like my fitness might start slipping away, I finally agreed to go to a class with Rachal in December, and I don't think I have missed too many days since.
This next year for me is going to be one of my toughest, so this little gym family and its acceptance of me came along at the right time. I have a 19-year-old daughter who is a sophomore in college and studying abroad in England. My son is a senior in high school and will be heading off to college soon. My husband of 22 years, who just retired after 20 years in the FBI, just landed a great job in Atlanta. Unfortunately, this means our family will be separated for the first time since he completed the academy because I will be staying here with my son while he finishes his senior year. My 6 a.m. class knows I was sad about being separated from my husband when I went on a two-week vacation. Eight months is going to really be a struggle for me!
This gym is so much more than anyone can actually put into words. I think my family actually gets tired of hearing me talk about it and the fact that the gym is one of the main reasons I don't want to move (how crazy is that?)! I know I will never find another one like it. It's more than the great workouts and good health you get from it. It's more than the amazing coaches ... every single one of them! I have never been such a close witness to so many positive, motivating, uplifting people in one place. I think the first time I realized how special it was was when Channel reached out to everyone to help a family who was going through a personal medical struggle that needed furnishings for a home in Houston. It seemed like within two days there were enough donations to furnish an entire house. I knew then that I was a lifelong member ... or at least until we move to Atlanta ;)
I hope Channel and Tommy know how much of an impact they are making on people, even people they might hardly see, or never see, because I know I certainly am changed from just having been a part of this gym a short time.
